The first battles were in rural areas of the municipality of Mapiripan (Meta), where a member of FARC’s 39 squad was injured, known by the alias of "Chita", who received humanitarian assistance and was subsequently evacuated, with support from Colombian Air Force to the capital of Meta, where doctors provide specialized medical care.

Last year, 2,128 guerilla members of the FARC, 492 from the Eln and 18 from dissident groups decided to abandon the terrorist ranks. Since August 7th of 2002, 20,555 armed-group members operating at the margin of the law have individually demobilized.

Mines are an old problem, but what we have seen during the last 10 years is the result of explosives training received by FARC during the time of clearings. They got into the topic of mine fields while they were negotiating with the government in Caguán. It is a very complicated situation because all the armed groups have resorted to this practice. -
