Santiago de Cali. In keeping with this year’s theme of Strengthening Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, the Colombian Army’s Third Division held a meeting with the International Red Cross Committee in the Third Brigade theater.
All officials and sub-officials of Nápoles Military Province attended the event, chaired by Nicholas Von Arx, Chief of the sub-delegation of the International Red Cross Committee (IRCC) for southwest Colombia. Among the items discussed at the meeting, held at the General Operations Unit, were personal protections guaranteed by International Humanitarian Law as it applies to Colombia; article 3 of the Four 1949 Geneva Conventions; the IRCC’s mission in Colombia and basic principles of International Humanitarian Law.
Nicolás Von Arxa acknowledged the commitment and respect the division’s troops have exhibited for the rules of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. He also made repeated reference to the Colombian Army’s receptivity and practice of these principles throughout the country.
The senior official thanked Major General Justo Eliseo Peña Sánchez, Commander of the Third Division, for the troops’ ongoing collaboration and availability in furthering the IRCC’s humanitarian work. “A victorious army is one that always applies the rules of International Humanitarian Law in everything it does. Such is the case with the Colombian Army,” the Red Cross representative said.
