Puerto Berrío. In order to find out firsthand the forced displacement in Colombia, delegates from ACNUR visited the Magdalena Medio region, where the military facilities are located, in order to open up a space for conversation, analysis and debate on this delicate issue of the attempts against Human Rights.
With support from Defensoría del Pueblo (People’s Defense), District Attorney’s Office, National Registry, Liaison’s Office and Social Action, the objective of the meeting was to reinstate the cooperation ties between the different member entities of the Military Armed Forces so that it is the Institution, in representation of the State, one of the control and support organisms to decrease the displacement index in the different regions of Colombia.
Mr. Roberto Mignone, the delegate from ACNUR expressed his concern regarding the topic since Colombia has about 3 million people throughout the country who are victims of forced displacement, which would indicate that on a yearly basis there are 250,000 displaced people and about 1000 Colombians a day are abandoning their land of birth, facts supported by figures presented by the Presidential Agency for Social Action.
