For those who have the honor of guiding the destiny of the Colombian Army, National Human Rights Day has great significance, because it reminds us of the unavoidable commitment that we as soldiers have taken up in compliance with our constitutional mission within the strictest adherence to the standards set.
Within the framework of that responsibility, we have declared 2008 “The Year of Strengthening Respect for Human Rights”, because we are convinced that this premise is the guiding night and the basis for our legitimacy, consequently for all our actions stamped with the seal of efficacy and transparency.
Likewise, the Colombian people may rest assured that their trust and backing is our main asset and these strengthen strict behavior from the men and women of our National Army, and for this reason we make every effort to prevent and correct conducts that may jeopardize their support, always respecting Human Rights in compliance with International Humanitarian Law, as patents of military discipline, tradition and honor.
We know that the duty of bearing arms for the Colombian soldier consists of being ready to risk life and limb in compliance with the mission, always emphasizing protection of the people whom we have sworn to defend and protect, with the firm conviction of obtaining a transparent military victory, without losing sight of the unavoidable commitment of respecting the dignity of every one and heeding humanitarian law, because it is only this righteous conduct from the troops while performing military operations, that constitutes the guarantee of legitimacy we have received.
A soldier is and will always be the synonym of respect and preservation of Human Rights and constitutional freedoms, defending democracy and the rigor of the Rule of Law.
