Deep within the Santander region, where criminal groups sought to hide, the decisive action of the National Army dealt a crushing blow to drug trafficking networks.
In the municipality of Betulia, Santander, the Chicamocha Military Gaula located and destroyed a laboratory for processing coca base paste belonging to the organized armed group (GAO), the Gulf Clan.
Thanks to the coordination of military intelligence, in collaboration with the National Police’s SIJIN and the use of technological capabilities from the Integrated Center for Monitoring, Surveillance, and Immediate Response (CIMVRI), along with the on-the-ground operations of the Military Gaula troops, this illegal complex was successfully dismantled. It produced approximately 200 kilograms of coca base paste per month, with a value of nearly 506 million pesos, funds that fueled illicit economies and strengthened criminal activity in the region.
More than 100 kilograms of cocaine base hydrochloride were seized and destroyed at the site, along with chemical inputs such as cement, potassium permanganate, lime, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, gasoline, and diesel fuel, used in the processing of the alkaloid. Similarly, microwave ovens, plastic and metal buckets, a “marciano-type” tank, and handmade equipment used for illicit production were found.
This result not only represents a direct blow to the finances of organized armed groups but also prevents serious environmental damage resulting from the indiscriminate use of chemicals and protects communities from the effects of these illegal economies. Every laboratory destroyed is another step toward reclaiming the territory, preserving natural resources, and ensuring peace of mind for families in Santander.
The Fifth Brigade of the National Army reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the security, rule of law, and well-being of Colombians, continuing with firm and sustained operations that weaken criminal structures and strengthen the State’s presence in every corner of the country.
