In a military ceremony, Brigadier General Diego Jaramillo Muñoz handed over command to Colonel Ernesto Javier Romero Peña, who assumes the role of new commander of this unit with jurisdiction in the department of Vaupés.During the ceremony, the institution praised the work of Brigadier General Jaramillo Muñoz, highlighting his leadership, commitment, and operational results in fulfilling the constitutional mission, contributing to the strengthening of security, institutional presence, and coordinated work with communities in this strategic region of the country.
The department of Vaupés, located in the heart of the Colombian Amazon, is characterized by its environmental richness, low population density, and the predominant presence of indigenous communities belonging to various ancestral peoples, who inhabit collective territories and maintain cultural traditions that are part of the country’s heritage. This situation requires a distinctive institutional presence that is respectful and coordinated with ethnic authorities.Colonel Ernesto Javier Romero Peña assumes command with the aim of continuing to consolidate military operations, strengthen territorial control, and reinforce coordinated efforts with civilian authorities and indigenous leaders, with a focus on security, environmental protection, and the well-being of the population.
The new commander has extensive military experience, having served in operational, administrative, and intelligence roles in units such as the 6th Mechanized Infantry Battalion Cartagena, the 48th Counter-Guerrilla Battalion, the 11th Infantry Battalion Cacique Nutibara, and the 28th Airborne Infantry Battalion “Colombia,” among others. His education includes postgraduate studies in security and defense, which support his leadership in taking on this new challenge in a region of high geostrategic complexity.
With this appointment, the National Army reaffirms its commitment to protecting the lives, security, and integrity of the communities of Vaupés, strengthening the institutional presence in remote territories and contributing to the region’s stability, governance, and cultural and environmental preservation.
